Youth key to achieving SDGs

The “Youth and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” report by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), studied the mutually supportive roles in the context of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the current youth development efforts worldwide.

The 2018 report noted that the active engagement of youth in sustainable development efforts is central to achieving sustainable, inclusive, and stable societies by the target date. The active engagement of youth would also help avert the worst threats and challenges to sustainable development, including the impacts of climate change, unemployment, poverty, gender inequality, conflict, and migration.

To address these issues, the Qatar National Vision QNV2030 outlines a bold and aspiring vision for Qatar’s future growth and development, based on sustainable human development, sustainable social development, sustainable economic development, and environmental sustainability.

Sustainability is a core aspect of Qatar’s development plans, and the youth are not left behind. In 2018, Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD) presented a lecture on the Sustainable Development Goals during the Doha Muslim Youth Capital 2019, presented by the Ministry of Culture and Sports. The workshop introduced young people to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in general and their importance. It also highlighted Qatar’s role in sustainable development internationally through the Fund’s activities.

Another initiative creating awareness among the youth is the Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar (AYCMQA), which is focused on environmental awareness, climate policy, and bringing more people into the environmental movement to address the ever-increasing threat of the ecological crisis.

Only yesterday, Qatar affirmed the importance of empowering youth towards sustainable development and prevention of crime and drug use to ensure the well-being and future of their countries and the world.

This was delivered by the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna H E Ambassador Sultan bin Salmeen Al Mansouri during a virtual meeting held on the sidelines of the sixty-fourth session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs on empowering the next generation of youth towards sustainable development and prevention of crime and drug use.

As Qatar continues on economic diversification, it is apparent to plan a future that is not solely based on oil and gas revenues. The State has invested in sports, tourism, fintech, and digitalization of the economy, driven by young entrepreneurs and inventors in the country.
