Qatar as always has come forward to help humanity in distress. This time, the country has taken the lead in helping thousands of victims of tropical cyclone Idai that severely-hit many African countries including Mozambique. Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has announced the provision of an urgent humanitarian assistance to 100,000 victims, in addition to providing direct food assistance to 12,076 residents of the affected area, as part of the State of Qatar’s solidarity with the friendly Republic of Mozambique that was devastated by a cyclone.
QFFD, in coordination with the Standing Committee for Rescue, Relief and Humanitarian Assistance, have sent a relief aircraft to the affected areas, to deliver 32 tonnes of relief supplies including medicine, food, baby milk, tents, and other relief materials.
During recently held 140th Assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Speaker of the Shura Council, H E Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud, who was also President of 140th Assembly of the IPU, had called for launching of a global campaign to help the governments of three cyclone-hit African countries.
Speaking on behalf of the State of Qatar, the Speaker of the Shura Council had expressed Qatar’s deep condolences and solidarity with three countries and their peoples. He had also called for the launch of a global campaign to help the governments of the three countries to overcome the plight and to meet the needs of their citizens.
The 140th General Assembly of the IPU had also unanimously adopted the emergency resolution on humanitarian assistance to cyclone-hit African countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.
The General Assembly resolution had called on parliamentarians to urge their governments to support urgent United Nations appeals for Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe in accordance with the values of the international organisation and to contribute appropriately by ensuring that adequate human and financial resources are allocated to the concerned countries. Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has always been at the forefront of providing assistance to people suffering any kind of hardship due to some natural disaster, war or any other situation. Recently, Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) also laid the foundation stone during an official ceremony for a cancer treatment centre project under the patronage of Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, President of the Republic of Burkina Faso.
Last month, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) had launched two new development projects in West Darfur State, with funding from Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD).
Under the project, a couple of model services complexes are to be established in the villages of Sisi (Kerenek District) and Abu Suruj (Sirba District). The plots of land were handed over to the contractors, to start immediately the construction works in the two complexes. In 2014, a similar model services complex was established in the village of Arara, Beida District, West Darfur.
