Within the framework of Qatar’s keenness to demonstrate the remarkable role of sports and emphasize the significance of unity for individuals and nations under the umbrella of sport that breaks down barriers, creates friendships and enhances cultural understanding, a new campaign has been launched at the United Nations.
The display of unity is possible when the FIFA World Cup kicks off every four years in one of the countries and this time being hosted in Qatar, where people from different parts of the world will come together to enjoy the power of sports in general and football particular.
Qatar has always valued the role engaging the public through sports and cultural activities and in order to highlight the value of football in enhancing sustainable development, peace, tolerance, inclusion and climate action, the State of Qatar launched on Saturday ‘Scoring For The Goals’ campaign at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters. The campaign comes within the framework of the ongoing preparations for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, a version which will unite the world and bring fans together when the football when the World Cup kicks off November 20.
The event, which was held on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, President of the Republic of Ecuador H E Guillermo Lasso, UN Secretary-General and other UN top officials, along with Qatari officials including Minister of Education and Higher Education H E Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi.
The World Cup brings people together “in a way and scale that no platform can match” in an era where political division thrives, stressing the importance of treasuring “the platforms that really unite” amid disinformation and misinformation” the Secretary-General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy Hassan Al Thawadi said while inaugurating the ceremony of the event.
Al Thawadi emphasized that the initiative is led by the State of Qatar and the Education Above All Foundation. The initiative is “designed to integrate and enhance football’s role as a vehicle to attain the targets comprising the 17 SDGs”. Al Thawadi hailed the State of Qatar’s global initiative for the development of sports, represented by the Generation Amazing Foundation which “is built around the goals of sustainable development and operates in more than 40 countries, and has already met its target of reaching one million beneficiaries ahead of the World Cup”.
‘Scoring For The Goals’ campaign reflects the vision of the State of Qatar to harness sports as a tool for achieving tolerance and consolidate coexistence among peoples of the world, regardless of their ethnic origins or cultural affiliations.
