Excellent care for the elderly

Qatar keeps its elderly and vulnerable people closer to heart and always strive to ensure that they get equal opportunities, facilities and welfare measures extended by the government and other agencies in the country.

Providing the best care to the vulnerable people and children is the top priority of the health sector of the country and the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) is doing its best to make sure that these people are not deprived of their right to good health care and support whenever and wherever they need it.

For more than two years now, people across the world have been going through immense hardship, because of the COVID-19 making the elderly and weaker sections of the society even more vulnerable.  In the western world, the pandemic wreaked havoc at nursing homes or special facilities, where most of the elderly people are being taken care of, and thousands of the elderly died infected by the Coronavirus.

But in Qatar the picture was entirely different as even before the start of the pandemic in the country, authorities were well-prepared with enough treatment and quarantine facilities made ready. All the agencies and officials right from the uppermost rungs of the government have extended their best effort with efficient coordination, which helped the country save hundreds of thousands of lives and provide world-class care to the infected people.

The vulnerable people of the society were taken special care of throughout the pandemic and most of those measures, such as home care and priority in vaccination are still continuing. The Home Healthcare Service of the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is running a campaign for vaccinating older people and other vulnerable people who find it difficult to go out their houses for treatment.

The drive aiming to provide a booster dose of the vaccine and educational support is a continuation of the successful programme that began in February last year. As the elderly are at high risk of severe COVID-19 infection it is important that they receive the booster dose in time. The Home Healthcare Service team will ensure that these people got their vaccination and they and their caregivers are educated on how to protect themselves from the virus.

This is just another step by the MoPH, which has already been appreciated for the exemplary service it provided throughout the pandemic. Latest among them was highlighted by the Gulf Health Council which praised the efforts of the MoPH. The Council noted that the Ministry was ranked 15th globally among the best health ministries in dealing with the pandemic according to a classification by German magazine Der Spiegel.
