The opening of the Lusail Expressway project and the arches at Interchange 5/6, the biggest and tallest monument in the country, is a testament to the fact the unjust siege has had little impact on the ongoing infrastructure works and projects scheduled to be completed in the run up to 2022 World Cup.
The opening of the project, coinciding with National Day celebrations, is a proud moment for Qatar, its citizens and expatriates alike, and a day of pride.
Terming the launch as yet another milestone for Qatar, Minister of Municipality and Environment H E Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi said the project reflects the country’s ability to implement and complete its projects under the imposed siege. Public Works Authority (Ashghal) President Dr Eng. Saad bin Ahmad Al Muhannadi thanked Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani for their tireless efforts to make a dream come true.
Lusail Expressway is an iconic architecture with characteristics inspired by Qatar’s marine heritage and forms a combination of Qatar’s past and future. The blue wall panels that decorate the tunnels are inspired by the waves of the fishermen nets under the water. The arches at Interchange 5/6 are the biggest and tallest monument in Qatar with a height of 100 metres and width of 147 metres, and weighing more than 9,300 tonnes of steel.
In an achievement, Ashghal had also opened recently key parts of the expressway network, through a number of projects including the Khalifa Avenue and Al Rayyan Road Upgrade Phase Two. It must be noted that Ashghal has achieved many progresses on the whole expressway and infrastructure projects this year.
Despite challenging times in the last six months because of the blockade, Ashghal completed 250km of highway works out of a total of more than 400km. The openings included the completion of 40 multi-level intersections. As for the road sector, G Ring Road was opened along with the middle stage of Dukhan Highway, the southern part of Doha Expressway, Hamad Port Road, in addition to the first phase of Al Rayyan Road and the first phase of the Orbital Highway, among others.
Qatar has achieved many remarkable records in development, construction and other projects in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. With some projects nearing completion and others getting completed ahead of schedule, it is evident that Qatar is moving ahead in its march with determination towards achieving all desired goals.
