For Qatar sustainability is the top priority for its development projects and the fact is evident from different initiatives taken by the State from executing small neigbourhood infrastructure projects to the resolve of organizing a carbon-neutral 2022 FIFA World Cup. Qatar’s sustainability mission and vision is moving forward at a steady pace and different state institutions are achieving set goals to protect environmentally-friendly tomorrow.
Proving yet again the nation’s commitment towards sustainability goals, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) completed the reclamation and rehabilitation works of Al Karaana Lagoon, six months ahead of schedule.
Al Karaana Lagoon, located 60km southwest of Doha, had been used since 2006 to receive about 6,000 cubic metres of industrial waste water every day, resulting in accumulation of sediments and solids at the bottom of the lagoons, and the formation of a contaminated layer (sludge) of up to 3.5m in some areas.
By transforming this unfavourable habitat into a favourable one for diverse species of birds, animals and fish, Ashghal has shown a path to the world towards sustainability. Undoubtedly, the initiative, termed inspiring and motivating by all, will spread positive vibes around the world to move towards a greener future.
The project provides a green rest stop with clean water for migratory birds flocking over the country. It also aimed at removing pollutants and minimising health risks to the environment surrounding the lagoons. After all, it protects and enhances the Qatari environment.
In the times when leaders and authorities of several nations turning a blind eye towards unscientific dumping of industrial and other hazardous wastes, Qatari leadership’s determination and dedicated efforts to protect the environment gain global attention and praise.
Qatar has been taking all possible measures to protect its environment and Qatar’s efforts in this regard send a clear message to the world on the need to have a fresh resolve to protect the environment.
The project is an important step in achieving Qatar National Vision 2030 in the field of environmental sustainability, as well as protecting Qatar’s environmental heritage and contributing to its prosperity. Qatar’s sustainability goals are well supported by the various entities concerned and this landmark achievement ahead of schedule highlights it.
Qatar is committed not only to its domestic environment but also playing important role at global level. Recently, Qatar affirmed its keenness to provide humanitarian and development assistance to the needy countries all over the world and contribute to achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals 2030, in the framework of its commitment to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, especially the principle of cooperation and partnership.
