THE world acknowledged the valuable contributions by the youth with the celebration of the International Youth Day on August 12. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a message on the occasion said: “Young people are on the frontlines of the struggle to build a better future for all. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the dire need for the kind of transformational change they seek – and young people must be full partners in that effort.”
Throughout the history of mankind, youth have played a vital role in shaping the future of any community as they are quick to embrace changes and put reformation in motion, by investing their full energy and resources into the philosophy that they believe in.
So, nurturing the talents of youth in such a way that they use their formidable energy, aspirations and quest for the development of the community and country they belong to. Engaging youth in varied activities according to their tastes such as sports, arts, voluntary work, and social activities is very important for the future of the state.
Qatar’s efforts in these areas were recongnised in a global level recently as the country made remarkable progress in the Youth Development Index 2020, ranking second in the Arab world and 32nd globally. The Youth Development Index issued by The Commonwealth Association, measures the status of young people in 181 countries around the world.
Congratulating the country’s youth on the achievement, Minister of Culture and Sports H E Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali, expressed his pride of the youth energies in Qatar saying that the achievement is the fruit of the efforts exerted by the youth in the service of their society and their homeland and their active participation in youth centres and sports clubs.
Qatar’s progress in the index was a fruit of the social youth movement as a result of the strategic steps taken by the authorities such as the election of the Youth Advisory Committee for the Minister of Culture and Sports, which represents the voice of youth in the proposal initiative making them part of the decision making process.
Over the years, Qatar has developed itself as a hub for world sports through hosting several international sports events and tournament and the upcoming Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Generation Amazing legacy programme organised by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy has been instrumental in making tangible changes in the life of hundreds of thousands of young men and women not only in Qatar, but across the world especially in the less developed countries.
Several programmes being conducted under the aegis of Qatar Foundation such as Reach Out to Asia have achieved revolutionary development in the life of thousands of young people.
