The Middle East is currently gripped by anxiety and heightened tension, fueled by the ongoing military and political aggression perpetrated by Israel. Repeated Israeli violations of Syrian and Lebanese sovereignty- preceded by strikes on Iran and Yemen - have been accompanied by daily massacres in Gaza. These actions raise a pressing and troubling question: What is Israel’s true objective in the region? Is it genuinely pursuing security, or is it attempting to impose a new colonial order, echoing the devastating legacy of the Sykes-Picot Agreement and the Balfour Declaration? It is Israel's hysteria, paranoia, and an imagined sense of power. Israeli officials have openly expressed ambitions over Syrian territory, claiming they seek to protect certain communities within Syria, while they are occupying part of Syrian territories. But protect them from whom? From their own internationally recognized and legitimate government? The irony is stark: Israel, which is engaged in the systematic oppression, genocidal war and displacement of an entire population under its occupation, now positions itself as a guardian of Syrian citizens. How can a state that consistently flouts international and humanitarian laws claim to uphold the rights of others?
On Wednesday, Israel bombed Syrian army headquarters in Damascus, citing the need to protect the Druze minority in Sweida following its warning to the Syrian government to stay away from the area. According to monitoring sources, sectarian clashes in Sweida have resulted in nearly 250 deaths. A day earlier, Syrian government forces had entered Sweida -in an attempt to implement a ceasefire brokered with Druze leaders, after deadly fighting with local Bedouin tribes.
Israel’s actions have drawn strong condemnation from the international community. The State of Qatar and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states have denounced the Israeli attacks on Syria as blatant violations of the country’s sovereignty, serious breaches of international law and the UN Charter, and a direct threat to the stability and security of the region.
In a statement issued Wednesday, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that Israel’s repeated assaults on the new Syria reflect its open disregard for international consensus, which supports Syria’s reconstruction, development, and the broader goal of establishing lasting peace in the region.
The Ministry called on the international community to take firm and urgent action to hold the occupation forces accountable and to curb their reckless and aggressive policies, which endanger both regional and global security.
Qatar reaffirmed its unwavering support for Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, as well as the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people to live in dignity and peace.
Lasting peace and security cannot be achieved through aggression and the violation of sovereign UN member states under any pretext or justification.
