As the US-led international forces withdraw from Afghanistan as per the the Doha Agreement in February 2020, the civil war in the country has escalated and Taliban has tightened its grip on Afghanistan by taking control of many areas and districts.
Along these developments, parties have come back to Doha which as usual is sparing no effort to achieve peace and stability not only in Afghanistan but in many countries experiencing armed conflicts that have claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, uprooted thousands of people and caused destruction.
For decades, the State of Qatar has shouldered an unparalleled diplomatic and humanitarian burden of ending most dangerous regional conflicts and it has proven to be one of the most influential countries in its diplomatic endeavors to achieve peace and end armed conflicts through mediation. The mediation experience between the United States and the Taliban is one of the most difficult challenges in which Qatari diplomacy has succeeded with the two parties striking an agreement in Doha that resulted in the recent withdrawal of the US led coalition forces from Afghanistan.
As the intra-peace talks between the Afghan politicians and the representatives of the Taliban movement is going on in Doha these days and as each side calling for peace, the State of Qatar reiterated its commitment to continue supporting the peace process led and controlled by the Afghans. Qatar’s efforts is aimed at consolidating the gains made on the course of the Doha negotiations in cooperation with international partners with the aim of ending violence and achieving stability, comprehensive peace and development in Afghanistan.
Speaking at the “Central and South Asia Regional Connectivity, Challenges and Opportunities” conference taking place in the Uzbek capital Tashkent, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs H E Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi stressed that the State of Qatar would continue its efforts in bringing the point of view of the Afghan government and Taliban. He said that promoting peace, security, and, development in Afghanistan will benefit the region and the world expressing Qatar’s appreciation to the important role Uzbekistan plays in development in Afghanistan, which includes bolstering strategic roads.
As has been stressed by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Al Muraikhi, the State of Qatar would continue to contribute to regional and global peace, as its efforts have borne fruit over the past years in reaching a peace agreement in Afghanistan. The Minister added that Qatar continues its efforts, in cooperation with international partners, including the United Nations, to facilitate a comprehensive peace agreement that restores peace and stability in Afghanistan.
