All the preparations for 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar reflect an emphasis on sustainability and legacy. With a number of steps being taken by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) from energy conservation and green spaces to use of recycled material and public transport connected stadiums, Qatar 2022 is going to be the most environmentally-friendly football tournament of the world.

Education City Stadium has become the first Qatar 2022 tournament venue to receive a five-star rating from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS). The prestigious award, considered a mark of excellence in sustainability, design and construction, was presented by the Founding Chairman of the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD) Dr. Yousef Al Horr, to Executive Director of the Technical Delivery Office at the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) Jassim Telefat on Thursday.

GORD presented three certificates to the SC for Education City Stadium: GSAS Design & Build (five stars), GSAS Construction Management Class A* and GSAS Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio.
Apart of Education City Stadium’s five star rating, the SC has so far taken a number of important measures for organizing a sustainable sporting event in Qatar. According to the SC, more than 850,000m² of new green spaces will be created in the stadium precincts, while more than 5,000 trees will be planted.

Qatar 2022 stadiums will be using energy efficient LED lights which will provide better quality illumination than conventional lights using only a third of the electricity. The stadiums for Qatar 2022 have been designed to consume 40% less energy during operation as well.

Another sustainability feature of next football world cup is stadiums’ connectivity through public transport. Doha Metro will provide a fast, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly way for everyone to reach matches, fan zones and accommodation during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Last year in November, the SC had also signed an agreement with the GORD to support the delivery of a carbon-neutral FIFA World Cup in 2022.

Education City Stadium, known as the ‘Diamond in the Desert’, features a range of sustainability features, including direct access to public transport via the Education City tram system link to Doha Metro; low toxicity indoor materials which provide a healthy indoor environment and LED sports lighting which offers better light quality at lower energy consumption. In addition, 85 percent of building materials for the stadium were regionally sourced, while 29 percent were generated from recycled materials.
