Report of the Fourth Committee to investigate Israeli practices affecting the human rights of the Palestinian people and other Arabs of the occupied territories presented at the 74th session of the UN Assembly on Wednesday revealed serious violations of human rights and details plight of children in detention and occupation’s profound effects on daily life of the Palestinians.
The report of the Fourth Committee UN Special Committee, sheds light on Israel’s excessive use of force during peaceful demonstrations, where 138 Palestinians have been killed and a further 15,901 injured, largely in the context of peaceful demonstrations held between September 2018 and August 2019.
With regard to the plight of children, the report noted that 29 children were killed and 4,387 others injured in Gaza during the same period. Children continue to suffer ill-treatment during arrest and detention, and that 210 children are in detention as of July 2019, the report noted.
Regarding the sharp increase in planning and expansion of settlement construction, the report said the year 2018 saw the highest number of approvals for new settlement housing units since 2012. This along the continuing siege imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip more than a decade ago and deteriorating economic and humanitarian situation and the ability of the population to enjoy their human rights.
Israel’s violations are not limited to detentions and extrajudicial killing of Palestinians, but also include demolition of houses, revocation of work and travel permits which is a collective punishment.
The State of Qatar which has firm position on the Israeli occupation practices has reaffirmed during the above session that it will continue to support the legitimate demands of the Palestinian and brethren Arab in the occupied territories to enjoy all their inalienable rights. Qatar expressed its rejection of illegal practices in the Golan, which violated international law and UNSC’s resolutions, and stressing that Israeli has no right to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the occupied Syrian territory.
In a statement delivered by Abdulrahman Ahmad Al Jarba, member of the Qatari delegation participating in the 74th session of the UNGA, said the report of the Special Committee documented a wide range of violations of the rights guaranteed under international law of the Palestinian people and other Arabs in the occupied territories, and reflected a regrettable and disturbing reality of human rights and the humanitarian situation in the territories as a result of such violations.
Al Jarba reaffirmed the position of Qatar rejecting the Israeli settlements in the occupied territories describing them as illegal and an obstacle to peace and the two-state solution as well as an obstacle to economic and social development
These practices are taking place for over 70 years because of the inaction of the international community and appeasement of Israel which has made the offender as a State above the law as long as it has never been held responsible for its crimes.
