Qatar’s mediation prowess

Qatar’s status as a world-leading international disputes resolution hub is integral to its position as a global, outward-looking nation. Beyond mediation, arbitration and other Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) forms, it is not a far-reaching notion to say that Qatar’s mediation pull and influence in bringing conflicting parties together is globally respected.

Qatar views the consolidation of peace comprehensively and not just in the absence of violence. The country’s policy stressed that peace is maintained through reconciliation and justice and the promotion of human development, among other things, emphasizing the promotion of social cohesion by rejecting injustice and exclusion.

Yesterday, Qatar announced the successful family reunification process of Ukrainian children with their families in Ukraine. This feat has been labelled an important step towards reuniting the rest of the children affected by the Russia-Ukraine war with their families. In a statement yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it facilitated hosting the children and their families at the Qatari Embassy in Moscow this week and accompanied them to their destination, ensuring their safety, comfort, and well-being.

MoFA also expressed Qatar’s gratitude and appreciation to the Ukrainian and Russian governments for their cooperation and commitment to ensuring the children’s safety, security and proper care throughout and before this process. The Ministry underlined that Qatar stands firmly in support of the efforts made by both the Ukrainian and Russian sides to safeguard the rights and well-being of the children affected by the ongoing crisis and stressed its commitment to facilitating the reunification of children with their families safely and rapidly in all aspects.

Once again, this success reaffirms Qatar’s unwavering commitment to serving as a reliable partner and its enduring commitment to promoting peace, stability, and security regionally and internationally. It has shown that Qatar remains fully prepared to play a constructive role in addressing crises and conflicts worldwide today. It also highlights mediation as a core component of Qatar’s foreign policy.

Minister of State for International Cooperation, H E Lolwah Al Khater, while confirming the mediation, in a statement on X, said Qatar will continue its mediation efforts in this context and others, in line with its principles towards conflict resolution and peace-making. This latest mediation follows the recent Qatar-brokered release of American prisoners from Iran and Iranian prisoners from the US. In the region, Qatar’s humanitarian efforts in mediating and de-escalating conflicts have encouraged peace and security. Recently, Qatar has been reported to be in contact with both parties in the Gaza war to broker prisoner exchange and ensure the conflict is contained with no regional spillover.
