Qatar and Algeria have distinguished historical relations and the two countries are keen to advance the ties to serve the common interests, goals and aspirations of their peoples. The two countries share similar views on a number of issues, most notably Palestine, with both Qatar and Algeria refusing to normalise ties with Israel and condemning its ongoing crimes against Palestinians.
The relations of the two countries have been strengthened and expanded through a series of visits by the leadership of the two countries. The visits made by H H the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and H H the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to Algeria as well as the mutual visits of ministers, delegations and senior officials in the two countries show the keenness of the two countries to strengthen relations.
Algeria’s President H E Abdelmadjid Tebboune arrived in Qatar on Saturday for a two-day visit. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani received President Tebboune and the accompanying delegation at Hamad International Airport. H H the Amir and the Algerian President held talks at the Amiri Diwan on Sunday. They discussed bilateral relations and ways to enhance them, especially in economy, trade, industry, energy, and technology. The talks also touched on key regional and international issues.
There are many agreements, MoUs and protocols singed between Qatar and Algeria, which include cooperation in the fields of economy and trade, industry, energy, mining and investment, agriculture and tourism, health and sports, customs, maritime transport, agriculture and military cooperation as well as the sectors of culture, media, sports and urban planning.
There is cooperation in the legal and judicial fields, combating commercial fraud, avoidance of double taxation, fishing, water resources and natural reserves.
These agreements strengthened relations between the two countries, elevating them from the stage of bilateral cooperation to an ambitious strategic partnership.
Algeria is one of the investment destinations that receive the attention of Qatari businessmen. A number of Qatari investment projects were launched in Algeria in recent years, most notably the Algerian Qatari Steel (AQS) project in the Bellara industrial zone in Jijel, northeast of Algiers, at a cost of approximately $2bn, which has a production capacity of 5 million tonnes of steel.
The project of Ooredoo Group in the telecommunications sector has achieved a remarkable success in Algeria. Besides, there are dozens of Qatari-Algerian joint companies operating in the Qatari market, and the number is expected to increase in the coming years.
