One of the most prestigious and celebrated film festivals in the world, the Cannes Film Festival, kicked off yesterday at Cannes, a city on the French Riviera. The festival showcases some of the best and most innovative films of the year and has a long history of discovering and promoting new talent in the industry. The festival attracts a wide range of industry professionals, including directors, producers, actors, and journalists, as well as thousands of film fans.
Also celebrating the glamourous annual festival will be Doha Film Institute (DFI) with a record 13 DFI-supported films selected for the festival this year. Two of its co-financed projects, “About Dry Grasses” by Nuri Bilge Ceylan and “Club Zero” by Jessica Hausner, are selected for the top category, In Competition, and are in the race for the Palme d’Or prize.
DFI plays a significant role in promoting and supporting cinema from the Arab world and beyond. In recent years, the DFI has established a strong presence at the Cannes Film Festival, playing an important role in promoting and fostering international collaboration in the film industry.
It’s a matter of great pride that DFI has made significant progress in a short time to not only bring out world-acclaimed movies but also nurture and grow many talented filmmakers from Qatar and the region. DFI-funded or co-financed films have won many prestigious awards all over the world including an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars for Asghar Farhadi directed “The Salesman”, which was also selected for ‘In Competition’ at Cannes.
Some other noteworthy films co-financed by DFI that were ‘In Competition’ in the past include “Capharnaüm” by Nadine Labaki, “The Wild Pear Tree” by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, “It Must Be Heaven” by Elia Suleiman and “Memoria” by Apichatpong Weerasethaku.
DFI has also been instrumental in promoting Arab cinema and fostering collaboration and exchange between Arab filmmakers and the international film community. By supporting individual filmmakers, promoting new talent, and facilitating co-productions, the DFI has helped produce movies that stand out from the crowd in form and content.
