Based on the staggering impact of climate change on all aspects of human life, including safety, food supply and way of life in general, Qatar has adopted a clear and balanced approach in addressing the phenomenon of climate change which is increasingly posing formidable challenges to all humankind. This balanced vision has been adopted under the Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030, which set food security, sustainable and conservative water use and processing, and addressing climate change among its major development priorities. Such clear and balanced approaches in all forefronts of developments are essential to achieve long sighted development plan and implement strategies of social and economic sustainability.
Within the framework of the QNV 2030, food security for its population, the region, Arab world and globally especially to countries suffering from drought and shortage in food supplies. Qatar’s initiatives to promote agriculture and relevant technology are essential part of its strategy and commitment to food security that promotes a healthy population and sustainable production at national and global levels.
Consequently, Qatar has always harnessesed every means to propose and support platforms that furnish potential opportunities or platforms for industry specialists to explore a wide range of agricultural technologies, equipments and systems.
Qatar's organisation of the annual International Agricultural Exhibition (AgriteQ) comes in this context to bring together key decision-makers, promote agricultural activities in the country and make participants gain valuable insights, and discover the best practices.
The exhibition has brought together participants from 55 countries and more than 675 agriculture, food, and animal production companies. It is worth noting that the exhibition is significant as a strategic platform to explore new horizons to upgrade the Qatari agricultural sector. It further highlights how the government prioritises the agricultural industry and spares no effort to achieve self-sufficiency in food production, make great leaps of local output, provide consumers with quality products and avoid any supply chain disruption. Qatar’s strategy to increase local production of fresh foods utilizing its resources and enhancing its storage capabilities is in line with its plan to diversify economy.
Globally, weather and desertification patterns have become increasingly irregular. Nearly two-thirds of the Middle East population lives in areas lacking sufficient renewable water resources to sustain crop production.
Agriculture in the Middle East represents 13% of the region’s GDP, but the sector plays a strategically important role in promoting resilient food systems, keeping critical economic sectors alive, and forming the base of many economies.
