Life without drinking water is unthinkable. Safe and pure drinking water is the fundamental necessity to sustain life of human beings. As safe water makes great contribution to the health and well being of people, providing enough, affordable water is the topmost priority of any country. In arid countries such as Qatar, where the availability of potable ground water is rare, people are mainly dependent on government supply for accessing water.

With its high-end desalination plants, vast storage facilities, widespread distribution networks, Qatar has been keen on providing enough drinking water to the people in the country. Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), the agency tasked with ensuring uninterrupted supply of utilities in the country, has been making steady progress in making purest and safest water available to its customers at moderate cost. Kaharmaa spared no efforts in acquiring and applying latest technical and scientific advancements in water quality management and distribution which has won over the hearts and minds of its consumers.

On Monday, Prime Minister and Minster of Interior H E Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani inaugurated the Water Quality Monitoring Laboratory in Al Thumama. The laboratory is equipped with the latest and most sophisticated technologies for round the clock monitoring of water quality, right from its main source, through the distribution networks till it reaches the consumer. It employs six advanced technologies to examine and measure various physical, chemical and biological elements that contribute to improving water quality.  It is also equipped with five modern instruments to measure and control toxicity, turbidity and acidity levels of water.

The drinking water in Qatar has long been lauded for its quality by experts and common people alike. Doctors have been recommending Qatar’s tap water more than bottled water. At the same time, consumers were being cautioned about maintenance and hygiene of the water storage facilities such as overhead tanks. Most often the source of sediments and dirt in the tap water is the water tank. So, regular maintenance of the tanks are essential.

Last year, drinking water quality of Kahramaa exceeded the index of International Standards for Drinking Water of World Health Organisation. And in the same year, it achieved an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for Largest Drinking Water Storage Tank. The company launched the strategic Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project in December 2018 as the largest expansion in the country with a total capacity of about 1,500 million gallons, which would cover the country’s storage needs till 2026. The people in Qatar can be confident of getting pure, uninterrupted supply of drinking water at their homes at affordable rate.
