Being an active and responsible member of world community, Qatar has again announced over $62m voluntary contributions to core resources of a number of United Nations agencies, departments and programs in 2020.
In recent years, Qatar has emerged as a leading donor country and at numerous occasions announced generous aid for millions of people across the world in different fields from education to health as well as for the nations hit by natural disasters.
In December 2018, Qatar had signed a number of agreements with the United Nations and pledged $500m for different UN programs over the next few years.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had signed the agreements during the Doha Forum.
H H the Amir also announced at the UN Climate Action Summit 2019, held in September this year in conjunction with the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, Qatar’s contribution of $100m for the support of small developing island states and the least developed states to deal with the climate change, natural hazards, environmental challenges and to build the capacity to counter their destructive effects.
Now on Thursday, the State of Qatar pledged $62.78m in voluntary contributions to core resources of a number of United Nations (UN) agencies, departments and programs in 2020, emphasising that the State attaches the utmost importance to strengthening its partnership with the UN system in order to meet common global challenges.
Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations H E Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani announced this assistance at the United Nations Pledging Conference for Development Activities held at the UN headquarters in New York.
HE the Ambassador explained that contributions to core resources would be distributed to a range of UN offices, where $15m would be allocated to the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism, $10m to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), $8m to UNRWA, $8m to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and $5m will go to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Other contributions will also be allocated to UNICEF, the UN Office High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), the UN Trust Fund for Resident Coordinator System, the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict and the Office of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth.
Meanwhile, Qatar has also reiterated its commitment to supporting development efforts for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and assisting them in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
