Endeavours for peace, stability

The State of Qatar believes that diplomacy, negotiation and co-existence of fellow citizens of any country on the basis of mutual respect are the best ways to achieve lasting peace and stability. The State of Qatar, bearing its moral responsibility towards the Chadian brothers, did not hesitate to accept the invitation of the Chadian people to host Chadian-Chadian negotiations which kicked off yesterday here in Doha.

Qatar, after hosting many successful peace talks and negotiations that contributed to achieving security, stability and regional and international peace, will spare no effort to make the current intra-Chadian talks or inclusive national dialogue achieve its ultimate goal of establishing sustainable peace and stability for the people of Chad which will enable the country to face the challenges of development and prosperity.

Qatar’s hosting of the Chadian peace talks comes in line with the State of Qatar’s firm position in support of resolving crises through diplomatic means and dialogue as stressed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Paris recently. Qatar will spare no effort in playing its role with its partners to achieve reconciliation between the Chadian parties, benefiting from its long experience and history of conflict-resolution between warring factions in various parts of the world.

This is not the first time for Qatar to play a role in restoring peace and stability in Chad as it supported the signing of the Doha Accord in 2009 and facilitated agreement signing amid tensions between Sudan and Chad in 2008, when both countries accused one another of supporting insurgent groups and rebel attacks inside their territories. The current talks between Chadian government and armed rebel groups are continuation of preliminary talks that have been held several times under Qatar’s mediation.  The hopes of many are pinned on these negotiations and the people of Chad deserve to enjoy peace, security, stability, development and prosperity, said Minister of State for Foreign Affairs H E Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi.

Therefore every effort must be made to achieve these goals for the benefit of this generation and future generations, said Al Muraikhi, adding that it is necessary to put the national interest above all interests, to place consensus and reconciliation as a priority above all priorities, and to be wise and realistic.

His Excellency also noted that Chad, like other developing countries, is facing major development challenges that require making every effort to move forward in the path of progress and prosperity as political stability is a prerequisite for establishing lasting peace, security,  development and protection of human rights.
