It was a busy and active day, yesterday, for Qatari diplomacy as all top leaders were engaged in global discussions on several issues affecting peace, security and cooperation on a regional and global level. It is a testament to the fact that Qatar is an active partner in peacemaking, often bringing divergent opinions and parties to negotiating table and help chart out a common goal which will serve as a solution for several festering issues affecting millions of people. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani yesterday addressed the G-20 extraordinary meeting on Afghanistan hosted by Rome, in which a host of world leaders including US President Joe Biden, Europe’s G-20 leaders and several other heads of states and foreign ministers attended.
H H the Amir reiterated Qatar’s keenness on preserving security and stability of Afghanistan, which are the preconditions for development and prosperity. In this regard H H the Amir cited the signing of Doha Agreement between the United State and the Taliban movement on February 29, 2020, after a prolonged dialogue between the parties hosted and sponsored by Qatar, and which served as the beginning of the path towards attaining sustainable peace in Afghanistan.
Calling on the caretaker government in Afghanistan to fulfil the obligations in this regard, H H the Amir called on the international community to shoulder its responsibility to that country, foremost of which is humanitarian aid and relief which cannot be delayed. Amir stressed the importance of continuing the construction and development efforts, especially the efforts for preserving the education of the middle-class and those who have expertise, calling for avoiding a real brain-drain and experts flight that Afghanistan may suffer for a long time.
“Before giving advice and setting conditions, it is essential to bear in mind that the state institutions in Afghanistan are practically in ruins, and that the first task lies in rebuilding and steering them, and that giving the Afghans an opportunity to do this task and offering them a helping hand contribute to the confidence-building process,” H H the Amir said.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs addressed the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in the capital of Kazakhstan, Nur-Sultan. The Deputy Prime Minister appreciated the confidence-building catalogue of CICA which includes a broad concept of stability and security issues in their political, economic, cultural, humanitarian, counter-terrorism, and other dimensions that contribute to strengthening multilateral cooperation among member states. H E the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed Qatar’s position that multilateral cooperation is the only way to meet the challenges that are plaguing the world now such as epidemics, climate change and threats to safety and security in different regions.
Doha is also hosting the 4th Global Security Forum (GSF) which is being held in Sheraton Doha Hotel. The theme of the three-day conference is ‘Cooperation or Competition Changing Dynamics of Global Security.’
