Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani embarked on a historic state visit to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, marking a significant milestone as the first Arab leader to visit the nation. This visit underscores Qatar’s foreign policy commitment to fostering robust economic and political ties with nations worldwide.

H H the Amir’s visit to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana is poised to fortify and enhance bilateral relations across multiple domains, with particular emphasis on economic, political, and cultural facets. Furthermore, it promises to unlock new opportunities for these relations to flourish. Importantly, the visit is anticipated to stimulate increased investment and trade activities between the two countries, particularly in sectors such as energy and food security.

H H the Amir and President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana H E Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali held an official talks session yesterday at the presidential palace in Georgetown and they witnessed the signing of an agreement on economic, commercial and technical cooperation and an agreement on the encouragement and protection of mutual investments. They also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the legal fields.

Since its establishment in 1996, the bilateral relations between the two countries have seen remarkable development over the years. The solid ties received a further boost with the opening of the Embassy of Guyana in Qatar during the visit of their President to Doha in May 2023.

During his visit, the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, in his meetings with various officials in Qatar explored investment prospects in Guyana and the collaborative potential with the Qatari private sector to advance these opportunities. He expressed optimism that these meetings would further bolster the existing avenues of cooperation between the two nations, taking into account Guyana’s untapped potential and the shared interests of both countries.

Acting Charge d’Affaires in the Embassy of the State of Qatar Mohammed Ebrahim Al Rumaihi said that he expects mutual visits between businessmen to explore investment opportunities available to both sides and to benefit from many incentives and advantages offered by the governments of the two countries in these areas.

Guyana’s economy has been on the surge since the discovery of crude oil in 2015 and commercial drilling in 2019 and is one of the few economies to grow despite the pandemic in 2020. The country offers Qatari investors opportunities to invest in many sectors, mainly in oil and gas, infrastructure, tourism, services, hospitality, and agriculture among others.
