Qatar launched an initiative to develop the country’s public education in 2004 under the slogan “Education for a New Era.” It aims to provide better methods of education for the children of Qatar.

With a clear vision of leveraging education towards economic diversification, the Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030), which seeks to transform Qatar into “an advanced society capable of sustaining its development and providing a high standard of living for all of its people,” outlines the country’s goals and identify education as a critical vehicle for meeting these targets.

Qatar University is at the core of these educational reforms and achievements. Established in 1977, the university has graduated its 44th batch of students and contributed immensely to its renaissance, offering a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Yesterday, the prestigious institution reached another milestone with the graduation of the first batch of medical students from the College of Medicine (CMED). This year, QU is graduating 3,648 students, of which 126 were honoured by Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

According to Dr. Hassan Al Derham, QU President, the university has contributed to the realization of this renaissance by preparing generations of competencies exceeding 57,000.

This year, QU’s rankings have impressively risen to second in the Times Higher Education Arab University Rankings - 2021 edition. QU has also ranked 224 globally, according to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking 2022, closing the gap on the top 200.

QU’s Strategy 2018-2022 stated that resources would be directed to recruit, invest in and retain leading faculty and researchers, and the university will draw on their creativity in reconstituting the curricula and pathways in a manner that distinguishes Qatar as a model national university. Research is an integral part of QU and is bolstered by the state-of-the-art Research Complex. It has several research centres which have stimulated research studies by undergraduates and graduate programmes.

QU-YSC recently won four prizes at the Sixth International Exhibition for Innovation (ISIF 21) in Turkey and silver medals at the International Invention Competition for Young Moslem Scientists (IICYMS) 2021 held in Indonesia among many other recognitions.

Also, several research and studies in and outside Qatar by QU faculty and students have shed light on issues like renewable energy and sustainability, cancer research, cybersecurity, and much more.

Qatar University’s new strategic direction will enable it to tackle the barriers to success that face its students, providing them with theoretical and practical skills to make them more attractive in an ever-changing labour market.
