Qatari women are serving the country in an excellent manner in various sectors thanks to equal opportunities provided by the State to them in education and employment. Many prominent Qatari women have also won international achievements through their dedication and hard work in their respective fields.
Yesterday, International Day of Women and Girls in Science was marked across the globe. Like other parts of the world Qatari women are also excelling in the field of science and technology and holding many important positions in the country and winning awards abroad.
They have their presence in the Cabinet, in the Shura Council, taking part in decision-making processes and also running many institutions successfully.
Also yesterday, the Regional Subcommittee on Polio Eradication and Outbreaks at the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean chose Minister of Public Health H E Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari as co-chair of the committee.
Recently, Dr. Hanadi Al Hamad won His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Prize for Research in Health Care for the Elderly and in Health Promotion award. On December 22, 2015, the UN General Assembly had decided to establish an annual International Day to recognise the critical role women and girls play in science and technology.
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated on February 11, is implemented by Unesco and UN-Women, in collaboration institutions and civil society partners that aim to promote women and girls in science. The Day is an opportunity to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. Gender equality is a global priority for Unesco, and the support of young girls, their education and their full ability to make their ideas heard are levers for development and peace.
On the eve of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Dr. Hanadi Al Hamad, Medical Director of Rumailah Hospital, at Hamad Medical Corporation, said that Qatar has a pioneering role in all fields and part of Qatar’s development is its investing in people. “The educational opportunities have been offered to Qatari girls at all levels of education including university levels and post graduate studies. I got a free scholarship in post graduate studies and in employment the equality,” she said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Muna Al Maslamani, Medical Director of Communicable Disease Center at Hamad Medical Corporation said that Qatar encourages working girls and women whether they are in the health or non-health sectors. “I emphasise on community empowerment thanks to the national, wise leadership. The leadership has encouraged and still encourages many women to hold positions.”
