Hamad Port’s splendid growth

Hamad Port continues to make Qatar proud by creating new records. It has set a new Guinness World Record of being port with the deepest artificial basin ever made on Earth.

Hamad Port’s basin is 4 kilometers long, 700 meters wide and 17 meters deep. Basin construction took about two-and-a-half years of excavation, during which over 6,900 tonnes of explosives were used to challenge the drafts - with full commitment to preserving wildlife and marine life - to extract more than 44.5 million cubic meters of dredged material, which was later used in other construction works at the project, resulting in huge savings.

This achievement by Hamad Port follows its splendid performance in the past.  Hamad Port was ranked at 114 in top 120 container ports ranking of 2018.

In November 2018, the Ministry of Transport and Communications had celebrated the handling of over two million TEU (containers) and five million tonnes of cargo at Hamad Port. This remarkable feat was achieved in record time with operations at Hamad Port since its launch in less than two years.

Since commencing operations in December 2016, Hamad Port has modernised the way Qatar handles imports and exports and has helped in facilitating the growth and diversification of the country’s economy. It has acquired 28 percent share in the volume of trade in the Middle East.

Within a short period of time, the port has reached global port connectivity coverage with 40 ports spanning over three continents.

It is also playing a major role in securing the needs of local markets and projects implemented by Qatar, ensuring access of Qatari products to the global markets. Hamad port registered an overall container growth of 71 percent in 2018 over 2017. The ports received around 661,331 containers in the first half of 2019, which is around 2.5 percent more than the same period in the same period of last year, according to Mwani Qatar.

The port is fast becoming a hub of maritime trade in the Middle East but also an environmentally-friendly facility.

Hamad Port’s strong capabilities, modern facilities, and advanced systems will position Qatar as a re-export hub in the region, increasing the volume of trade between Qatar and the rest of the world. The port has seen tremendous growth in a short duration and is further cementing Qatar’s position as a regional maritime hub.
