Helping hand to Ukrainian refugees

While the State of Qatar maintains its traditional balanced foreign policy, Doha has followed the military escalation in Ukraine with great concern and called for engaging in constructive dialogue within diplomatic means to resolve the crisis.

This position not only stemmed from the Qatari foreign policy based on the principle of resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomatic means, but also from the fact that wars only generate tragedy for peoples who are forced to turn refugees and internally displaced, in addition to the loss of lives and property, as is the case today in Ukraine.  The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that since the outbreak of the war on February 24, the number of people who have been forced to flee the war in Ukraine has exceeded 4.5 million.

For this reason, the State of Qatar is focusing its efforts on humanitarian support, providing assistance to Ukrainian refugees and displaced persons, and supporting peaceful initiatives to resolve the conflict, in order to end the suffering of refugees and displaced persons. In this context, the State of Qatar announced yesterday, allocation of $5m in humanitarian aid to support Ukrainian refugees and displaced persons, through Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD).

This support is based on its moral responsibility, in light of the difficult humanitarian situation that millions of refugees are facing in the shadow of the continuing military escalation and tension requires the solidarity of the international community to develop emergency plans to respond to their urgent needs.

Qatar, as usual, did not fail to participate in humanitarian conferences and initiatives to support refugees, therefore, the donation announcement was made during Donors’ Conference for Ukraine by Assistant Foreign Minister H E Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater.

Al Khater stressed that the Ukrainians are experiencing a dark period in their history that forces them to flee, whether inside or outside Ukraine, to avoid war and its horrors, as is the case with the millions of refugees who have previously suffered from the scourge of war and the international community’s neglect of their suffering, such as the Syrian refugees, not to mention the longest tragedy of refugees in modern history, which is the tragedy of the Palestinian refugees.

She reiterated the position of the State of Qatar that underlines immediate cessation of military action in Ukraine, securing humanitarian corridors to ensure aid access, resolving the dispute through constructive dialogue and diplomatic methods, in addition to settling the conflict by peaceful means and avoiding what can lead to further escalation.
