Conserving resources

Water resources are depleting with every passing day and the world is constantly facing a series of challenges revolving around this phenomenon starting from scarcity of fresh water resources to ever-increasing demand due to environmental and climate change taking place and affecting the water resources.

Along the climate changes, poor management of water resources are also making situations worse forcing countries all over the world to place these challenges at the forefront of their national and regional priorities.

The State of Qatar has taken some important initiatives aimed at ensuring water security and preserving underground water reservoirs in the country exerting extra efforts towards sustainable development requirements within the framework of the National Water Strategy.

The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), besides its successful efforts to meet the growing demand of water and electricity, is raising awareness through the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency, Tarsheed, to reduce consumption and contribute to environment protection.

According to Khrammaa, the annual increase in water consumption in 2020 equaled 438 million gallons per day, while the production capacity reached 476 million gallons per day, and this is pushing towards constant increase of total production capacity which will reach 536 million gallons per day in the second quarter of this year showing an increase by 13 percent comparing to the last year. Taking this into account Kahramaa launched recently its new initiative to reduce water and electricity consumption by 5% in the residential sector.

Awareness of consumers plays a key role in saving water and electricity with the advent of summer when demand and consumption are significantly high, prompting the Corporation to launch the campaign with an aim to raise awareness.

This will significantly contribute to endorsing rationalization techniques and promoting responsible consumer behaviour with detailed follow-up techniques being implemented to provide customers with support and guarantee long-term results.

The initiative which will be implemented in 2021 and 2022 in four basic phases will constitute a milestone in terms of results in the residential sector, if it succeeds in reaching the desired reduction, estimated at 5% for both electricity and water consumption will be reduced, according to the President of Tarsheed program Abdulaziz Al Hammadi. If the initiative achieved its goal saving both electricity and water by 5%, it will help the country achieve savings estimated at about QR212m, as Engineer Mohamed Al Sharshani, head of the technical section at Tarsheed stressed.
