Boosting sustainability objectives

Qatar is swiftly moving towards environment-friendly solutions, emphasizing its commitment to combating the climate crisis and ensuring a sustainable environment.

By diversifying and investing in other energy sources, moving towards an electric public transport system, shifting to green buildings and expanding natural solutions, and Qatar’s commitment to hosting the first carbon-free FIFA World Cup later this year, Qatar has shown more than most that overcoming climate challenges can be achieved.

Recently, Qatar launched the National Environment and Climate Change Strategy, which states its intention to cut 25 percent in its greenhouse gas emissions and carbon intensity of its liquified natural gas facilities.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Municipality launched a set of hybrid environmentally friendly cars distributed to several municipalities to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

“The hybrid car contains two engines, one running on petrol and the other on electricity, where the two engines work alternately to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, while the electric batteries are charged from the petrol engine, and when using the brakes, therefore, the car does not need an electric source for charging as it charges itself,” the Ministry stated.

An integrated network of electric car chargers is also being integrated across the country to gradually support the Ministry’s plan to transform the electric transport system. Director of Mechanical Equipment Sherida Sultan Al Rumaihi said the Ministry is implementing the first phase of introducing new hybrid vehicles to reduce dependence on traditional fuels and carbon dioxide emissions. He also noted that these vehicles reduce 30% of fuel expenses.

Al Rumaihi added that “1,226 new environmentally friendly cars will be added during the coming period of various types per the Ministry’s requirements.” He said the first batch of 129 buses to transport the Ministry’s employees have already been received, including 57 buses from Karwa company operating with the Euro 5 engines.

This initiative is the latest in a long line of measures being implemented over the last few years, all within the country’s sustainability framework of the Qatar National Vision. Education City introduced the “Car-Free Day” initiative to limit the usage of vehicles in the area. Qatar also stresses that its gas production can help combat climate change by shifting from more harmful fuels to greener options. Also, the 2021 National Day was marked under the theme “Ancestral Meadows: A Matter of Trust,” a rallying cry for more public environmental consciousness.
