The relations between Qatar and the US have strengthened further after Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met US President Donald Trump in Washington and senior most leaders in the US government to discuss bilateral relations and ways to boost them in various fields. The meetings came a day after the H H the Amir held talks with Acting US Defence Secretary, Mark Esper, at the Pentagon and attended a dinner banquet hosted by US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, where the US President was also present.
In a speech during the dinner, H H the Amir said that his visit to the US reaffirmed the ideals the two countries shared and celebrated their mutual economic partnership. “Our nations share a commitment to human capital, working to create resilient, knowledge-based economies with an emphasis on education, openness and opportunity for all,” H H the Amir said. “Unfortunately, there are some in my region who do not share our beliefs. In today’s world, at times, alliances have to be made with necessary partners, and certain allies are not actually friends. But with the United States and Qatar, we are partners, allies, and friends. And our political cooperation in the wider region creates stability, so that economic development can flourish,” H H the Amir said.
President Trump praised the friendship with H H the Amir saying that H H the Amir has been a great ally and has helped in establishing a magnificent military installation, which people haven’t seen in a long while. “Tamim, you’ve been a friend of mine for a long time, before I did this presidential thing, and we feel very comfortable with each other,” Trump said. “Investments that you make in the United States — one of the largest in the world — are very much appreciated,” the US President added.
Earlier, H H the Amir, during talks with the Acting US Defence Secretary, said the two countries have strong strategic relations and will work together to reduce tension in the region.
The visit of H H Amir to the US is a new milestone in the strategic ties the two countries enjoy. The Qatari-American relations have been strong and well established for more than 45 years. Qatar has a distinct position on the US relations map as an ally, a strategic partner and a reliable friend of the United States. Both the countries stressed their commitment to enhancing commerce and investment.
