Partnership grows stronger

The strategic partnership between Qatar and the United Nations is growing stronger with the passage of time as the both sides are expanding the sphere of cooperation for global peace, prosperity and stability.

The signing of an important agreement between Qatar and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to establish the United Nations regional centre for combating cybercrime in Doha is another proof of this strong partnership.

The signing of this agreement will allow the launch of the activities of the United Nations regional centre for combating cybercrime during the next two months, and the centre’s activities covers the Middle East and North Africa region as well as capacity-building at the global level if needed.

The centre will also provide training and capacity-building for specialists in the countries of the region and in developing countries in general in the field of combating cybercrime, and this includes setting and planning policies and legislation to combat cybercrime, and exchanging experiences and information on cybercrime variables at the national and international levels.

The establishment of the centre comes at a time when the world is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of preventing and combating cybercrime, the dangers of which have increased in recent years.

The launch of the centre comes as a Qatari initiative to support international efforts to confront cybercrime in all its forms and names.

In March this year, Qatar inaugurated the UN House in Doha, on the sidelines of the fifth UN Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC5). The opening of the UN House added new dimensions to the relationship between the two sides, foremost of which is the commitment to this partnership and cooperation to strengthen the foundations of multilateral collective action in a way that responds to the aspirations of the peoples of the world.

Qatar has always been one of the biggest supporters of the international organisation and continues to provide financial contributions to many of its affiliated bodies and entities. The year 2021 witnessed the signing of two agreements between Qatar and the United Nations to open two new offices in Doha, an office of the United Nations Development Program and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The same year also witnessed the inauguration of the UNOCT Program Office on Parliamentary Engagement in Preventing and Countering Terrorism, which is considered the first of its kind in the world. The total financial assistance provided by Qatar to UN organisations amounted to nearly $900m, from 2013 until mid-2022, QFFD’s Director General said earlier in an interview.
