Qatar’s commitment to ensuring global peace, stability and a world free of terrorism remains solid and unshakeable. Over the years, Qatar has condemned acts of terrorism in the Middle East and worldwide.
Yesterday, the Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council H E Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, stated that “parliaments play in formulating policies and enacting legislation, especially in combating terrorism, preventing it and drying up its sources.”
According to a Qatar News Agency report, Dr. Al Sulaiti said that achieving this goal (combating terrorism) can only be done with the cooperation of all countries at the global level and concerted efforts at the national level, reviewing Qatar’s efforts in this field through its effective contribution to regional and international efforts, implementation of the measures included in the United Nations strategy that was adopted Since 2006, implementing all resolutions and measures issued by the Security Council related to combating terrorism and its financing.
Dr. Sulaiti stated this while participating in a parliamentary meeting held on the sidelines of the High-Level International Conference on Human Rights, Civil Society and Counter-Terrorism, United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) in Malaga, Spain.
Earlier in March, while speaking at the opening session of the high-level African Parliamentary Conference in Doha, Speaker of the Shura Council H E Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim asserted Qatar’s commitment to all national and international efforts to combat and eliminate terrorism and prevent the spread of violent extremism, especially the benevolent efforts of the United Nations. Besides, in February, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, H E Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani while participating in the UNOCT Annual Briefing to the Member States, expressed Qatar’s support for many UNOCT initiatives and programmes as a partner, particularly the anti-terrorism travel programme.
Qatar also announced the renewal of its support for the UNOCT with a $15m commitment annually for three years (2024-2026). The UNOCT office was opened in Doha in 2021 to serve as a global centre to support and build the capacities of parliamentarians from different countries of the world and to coordinate their efforts to combat terrorism. Last year, the UNOCT Programme Office on Parliamentary Engagement in Preventing and Countering Terrorism opened in Doha. It was announced then that the Shura Council would provide a $12.5m contribution to UNOCT for five years and premises and operational support for the Programme Office. Doha also hosts the International Hub on Behavioural Insights to Counter Terrorism, which opened earlier. In 2017, an estimated 26,445 people died from terrorism globally.
