Qatar's contribution to the integrated and sustainable development of the under-developed countries is being written in golden letters in the history of the world’s progress.
Qatar has always been keen on taking along other less privileged states in its march towards a holistic development whether in the field of education, youth employment, healthcare or infrastructure.
Yesterday, Qatar has assured the world that the Doha Plan of Action (DPoA) will be a starting point for transforming the lives of millions of people living in the most vulnerable countries and putting the least developed countries on the path towards sustainable and comprehensive development.
Qatar will host the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) from January 23 to 27, 2022, at the Qatar National Convention Center. Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador H E Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, while addressing the Organisational Session of the Preparatory Committee for the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries at the UN, said that Qatar’s decision to host the conference is in line with its belief that achieving the ambitious aspirations of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan will not be possible without paying special attention to the least developed countries.
She said that preparations for the Conference are proceeding in an efficient manner despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Conference is expected to adopt a 10-year programme of action for the LDCs to succeed the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) which concluded in 2020. In the last 10 years, the IPoA aimed at achieving sustained, equitable and inclusive growth by strengthening the LDCs’ productive capacity, building their human capacities, reducing the vulnerability to environmental shocks and disasters, ensuring financial resources and enhancing good governance at all levels.
There is no doubt that the Fifth Conference will be a success in charting new plans and actions for the allround development of LDCs as it is being hosted by Qatar, a country which already has proven its willingness to help the less developed states even during the pandemic.
The country has extended aid to over 70 countries to alleviate the pressure of the pandemic. Qatar Airways has never stopped flying despite world’s air travel coming to a standstill in the past one year, taking essential health care materials and medicine to different parts of the world and reuniting hundreds of people stranded in the farthest corners of the globe with their families during the pandemic. Qatar’s efforts in providing education, jobs and other essential living conditions for people in vulnerable areas has drawn wide applause from around the world.
