Book fairs have long served as vital cultural events that celebrate literature, honour writers and artists, and foster a love of reading across all segments of society. They provide opportunities to discover new genres, explore recent publications, and bring together readers, authors, and publishers from diverse backgrounds. Whether organized by schools, libraries, or community centres, or governments, hosting a book fair requires thoughtful planning, solid infrastructure, and a shared commitment to promoting knowledge.
In this spirit, Doha continues its proud tradition of hosting one of the region’s most prestigious literary events—the Doha International Book Fair. Now in its 34th edition, the fair commenced yesterday under the theme “From Engraving to Writing,” marking the largest event in its history. This year’s fair features 522 publishing houses from 43 countries, offering an expansive platform for literary exchange and artistic engagement.
First held in 1972 under the supervision of the Qatar National Library, the fair was originally a biennial event before becoming an annual gathering in 2002. Over the decades, it has grown in both scale and stature, attracting major international publishers and establishing itself as a cornerstone of Qatar’s cultural calendar. From just 20 publishers in its inaugural year to over 515 participants in its previous edition, the fair now spans 29,000 square meters and draws diplomats, intellectuals, and literary enthusiasts from across the globe. This year, the fair honours Palestine as its guest of honour, a gesture underscoring Qatar’s enduring support for the Palestinian cause. Palestine’s participation brings with it a rich cultural and literary heritage, infusing the fair with profound symbolic and historical significance.
The Doha International Book Fair is more than a marketplace for books; it is a cultural gathering point that asserts the enduring relevance of the printed word amid rapid digital transformation. It reflects the Ministry of Culture’s continuous efforts to nurture intellectual discourse, support writers, and enhance the nation’s cultural footprint on the regional and global stage. The fair’s program is notably diverse and intellectually rich, featuring literary symposiums, author talks, cultural salons, children’s activities, and performances at the main theater. Special attention is given to children’s literature, with new publishing houses debuting work aimed at young readers.
Doha International Book Fair remains a beacon of learning and literary celebration—highlighting Qatar’s leadership in the cultural arena and reinforcing the timeless power of books to inspire, educate, and unite.
