Last week has been a week of achievements for Qatar Petroleum in which state-owned public corporation with ExxonMobil took the final investment decision for developing the Golden Pass LNG export project.
Also, QP announced on Thursday a significant gas condensate discovery in the Brulpadda prospects, located in Block 11B/12B in the Outeniqua Basin, 175 kilometers off the southern coast of South Africa.
On February 5, Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil took the final investment decision for developing the Golden Pass LNG export project. The project is located in Sabine Pass, Texas, and is owned by Golden Pass Products LLC — a joint venture between affiliates of Qatar Petroleum (70 percent) and ExxonMobil (30 percent).
The decision to proceed with the $10bn+ investment was announced during a special ceremony held in Washington D C under the patronage of H E Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President and CEO of Qatar Petroleum, and Rick Perry, US Secretary of Energy.
The final investment decision will pave the way for the construction of the Golden Pass LNG export facility, which will have a production capacity of about 16 million tonnes of LNG per year. Project execution activities will commence in the near future, and are expected to create in excess of 45,000 direct and indirect full-time jobs in the US during the construction period, which is expected to take about five years.
Speaking at the ceremony, H E Al Kaabi said: “The Golden Pass LNG export project is not our first investment in the United States, and is certainly not going to be our last. It represents a significant part of the plans that Qatar Petroleum had announced to invest $20bn in the US energy sector, which we believe would bring great benefits for both the United States and the State of Qatar.”
Just two days later after announcing the Golden Pass LNG project, Qatar Petroleum and its partners, led by Total, announced on February 7 a significant gas condensate discovery in the Brulpadda prospects, located in Block 11B/12B in the Outeniqua Basin, 175 kilometers off the southern coast of South Africa.
Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President & CEO of Qatar Petroleum, H E Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, said: “We are pleased to announce the Brulpadda discovery as the first discovery in Qatar Petroleum’s international exploration ventures. This achievement is an important milestone that reflects the soundness of our strategy, in which international exploration forms an important pillar that will enable Qatar Petroleum to grow and expand our international footprint.”
With consistent achievements at home and abroad, Qatar Petroleum is accomplishing its own vision that says, “To become one of the best national oil companies in the world, with roots in Qatar and a strong international presence.”
