Safety of all top priority

Qatar has prepared for the FIFA World Cup 2022 for the past 12 years since awarding of hosting rights in 2010.  It has continuously built its infrastructure, constructed world-class stadiums, hotels, tourist attractions, public parks and many other amenities for this much-awaited global event, which is now just two weeks away.

The country has completed all arrangements for Qatar 2022. It has readied its airports for transportation of about 1.5 million expected fans and visitors, accommodation for their stay arranged, emergency and security preparations are in full swing, entertainment activities have been lined up and roads and buildings have been beautified. Qatar is determined to make the mega event the best version of FIFA World Cup ever and leave a lasting legacy for the region.

One of the major preparations was from security aspects. FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Security Operations Commander H E Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani has said that the safety and security of all participants in the tournament, including national teams, fans and visitors is a top priority.

The tournament’s Security and Safety Operations Committee implemented a series of plans, programmes, training courses, and joint exercises to raise the capabilities of the security staff. One of the programmes was the sports crowd security and safety programme, which was specifically designed to train government and private security personnel. The programme included several training sessions such as stadium security and safety, crowd management, human rights, first aid, and cooperation with the crowds.

Qatar is expected to deploy tens of thousands of security forces during the event. It has signed security cooperation deals with several countries. Qatari security forces, along with partners from 13 countries, recently carried out a five-day security exercise across the country.

Turkiye has announced it will send more than 3,000 riot police officers to help secure stadiums and hotels. In August, Pakistan agreed to send troops to Qatar to provide security. In the same month, the French parliament approved the deployment of about 220 security personnel for the tournament. The deployment will ensure the security of fans, including French nationals.

Qatar has also inked a security cooperation agreement with Morocco. Last year, Moroccan news outlets reported that Rabat will deploy cybersecurity experts to Qatar during the tournament.

In May, the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence said it will support Doha in delivering a safe and secure World Cup.
