The links between economy and environment are numerous because development at the cost of neglecting environment will affect the quality of life and leave the present and future generations in danger. Qatar has been doing remarkably well in its efforts to protect the environment by making sustainability the top priority of the nation.

A far-sighted nation never overlooks or undermines its environment related responsibilities and plans, executes timely measures relentlessly and meticulously for sustainable development. On a regular basis, it organises workshops, campaigns, events, projects etc. to raise environmental awareness.

Recently, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), represented by the Climate Change Department, has stepped up efforts to implement the project of planting one million trees in the country, which is a part of the global initiative on climate change and sustainable environment. The green initiative aims to encourage plantation of local trees which suit Qatari land.

The fact, that Qatar uses treated water for this, adding up the greatness of the mission as it gives double benefit for the environment. It is at a time when there are nations around the world, with plenty of natural resources, turning a blind eye on environmental issues, Qatar with its limited natural resources doing wonders in this desert land. Qatar chants the slogan of clean environment in each and every step it moves ahead.

According to a media report, over a billion people in the world have no clean water, one and a half billion people breathe air which is dangerously unhealthy and many of the nations are on the verge of famine.  The report tells how Qatar’s environmental efforts benefit the world.

Qatar also enacted laws and regulations necessary for the preservation of environment. The Qatar National Vision 2030 emphasises the need to address local issues related to climate change and its potential impacts. It was in the beginning of the year, MME organised a workshop to assess the potential of green growth in Qatar. Last year, MME launched a massive campaign to distribute seeds and seedlings of wild plants.

Qatar is cognisant of the role of education in environmental protection and sustainable development. It is the key reason why it emphasises the need for education to be interconnected with every aspect of sustainable development. The unique Qatari education is conducive for developing future environmental champions by making students completely aware on the environment in which they live.

With determined moves, Qatar is achieving its sustainable development goals and launching new initiatives to hand over a greener, cleaner world to coming generations.
