The State of Qatar has made significant strides in expanding its energy sector and electricity production to meet growing domestic demand, while simultaneously advancing its commitment to green energy and sustainable development. As one of the world’s leading natural gas producers, Qatar continues to invest heavily in its energy infrastructure, ensuring a reliable supply of electricity and positioning itself as a key player in global energy markets.
To accommodate rising consumption and support industrial and urban growth, Qatar has undertaken major projects to enhance its power generation capacity, incorporating advanced technologies to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. These include upgrading existing plants, expanding the national grid, and integrating smart grid solutions.
As part of this strategy to meet growing electricity demand and accelerate sustainable development, the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) signed four major contracts worth nearly QR3.1bn yesterday. These agreements are integral to expanding and modernising Qatar’s electricity infrastructure to support the country’s rapid urbanisation and long-term energy goals. These strategic investments are part of a comprehensive national plan to enhance electricity infrastructure, strengthen supply resilience, and promote environmentally responsible growth. These contracts are not only about expanding capacity but also about strengthening Qatar’s energy sector through strategic partnerships and local economic empowerment.
The contracts were awarded to a combination of local and international firms and involve the construction of seven high-voltage substations. These projects will also include the installation of 212 kilometres of underground cables and overhead lines to ensure reliable connectivity across the network.
At the same time, Qatar is increasingly focusing on diversifying its energy mix by investing in renewable energy sources, particularly solar power. The launch of the Al Kharsaah Solar Power Plant, one of the largest in the region, marks a pivotal step in Qatar’s transition toward clean energy.
