Qatar has championed and implemented a unique balance in its continued economic growth and the preservation of the environment. These measures include protecting and promoting marine and land biodiversity and ecosystem, and preserving natural resources and habitats. Over the years, the country has also significantly advanced the recycling sector to tackle plastic waste and cut the overall waste going to landfill. Among the most noticeable achievements has been the electrification of country’s public transportation network. This shift has already led to a reduction in carbon emissions. Complementing this, over 200 electric vehicle charging stations have been established, aiming for 1,000 by 2030.

To cut plastic waste, Qatar has banned single-use plastic bags, promoting alternatives like biodegradable and reusable bags. This initiative was part of a broader strategy to enhance waste management and promote recycling. Expo 2023 Doha further underscored Qatar’s environmental dedication. The event set a Guinness World Record by creating the longest sentence made from 40,000 plastic bottles, emphasising recycling and environmental awareness.

Under the Third National Development Strategy (2024–2030), Qatar targets a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, protection of 30% of its land and marine areas, and a 70?crease in groundwater extraction. These initiatives illustrate Qatar’s unwavering dedication to a sustainable future, aligning national growth with environmental stewardship.

The World Environment Day, being observed today, is an occasion to not only highlight the progress made for sustainability but also a reminder of the urgency of the situation. Scientists say climate change is causing extreme weather conditions in many parts of the world. This week, Qatar also launched the National Biodiversity Database to document and classify terrestrial and marine organisms. Minister of Environment and Climate Change H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie said the launch of the database is a strategic milestone in Qatar’s environmental path and reflects the country’s commitment to environmental governance and sustainable development.

Doha has also been selected to host the 2026 Nobel Sustainability Awards. The announcement by the Nobel Sustainability Trust reflects the growing international recognition of Qatar’s leading role in advancing sustainable development, promoting smart and sustainable economies, and driving innovative urban solutions.
