Qatar has taken several initiatives and made plans in the field of water security. Water is a scarce resource and all the countries are working hard to ensure water security.

Qatar’s water production capacity increased by 15 percent in 2017 with the opening of phase one of the Integrated Water and Power Project (IWPP) in Umm Al Houl according to Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).

In a speech on the occasion of the Arab Water Day, which is celebrated on March 3 each year, Minister of Energy and Industry H E Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada said Qatar attaches great importance to the water sector within framework of Qatar National Vision 2030.

According to  Kahramaa President Eng Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari the interconnectivity of resources and their connection with sustainable development is compatible with Kahramaa’s mission in sustainably providing high-quality electricity and water in Qatar. The corporation is putting a lot of effort in increasing the state’s strategic water reserves, as well as planning how to meet the increasing the demand for the resources.

The Corporation has taken several steps to meet the requirements of sustainability development including the Water Security Mega Reservoirs project that aims at building 15 tanks for water storage, the largest one in the country with the capacity of 1,500 million gallons to increase the strategic water reserve in the country.

Kahramaa has laid pipes of different sizes in a stretch of about 650 kilometres to connect the tanks with water desalinating plants.

According to  Kahramaa President phase one project will add about 1,500 gallons water to the strategic water reserve of the country that will be enough to cover the need by 2026.

Kahramaa continues its plans to establish new stations and maintain the existing ones in order to provide better services that meet the needs of development.

The Corporation is also working through its National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency “Tarsheed” to increase the awareness level of the community on the importance of adopting preventive steps to reduce the consumption of electricity and water. Tarsheed programme aims at cutting the per capita consumption of electricity by 25 percent and water by 35 percent by 2022.

Water plays an important role in achieving sustainable development in the country.

Kahramaa is committed to providing high quality water as per the international standard to its customers and to develop the necessary infrastructure to meet the water demand of the country.
