Advocating Arab solidarity

Qatar has been a staunch advocate of joint Arab action to promote sustainable development and peace in the region and overcome challenges facing the Arab world. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s participation in the opening session of the 31st Arab League summit in Algiers, Algeria, shows the importance Qatar attaches to this forum of the Arab world. A number of heads of states and leaders from the Arab world gathered in the Algerian capital to deliberate over a number of regional issues and find way forward to meet the aspirations of the people of the Arab world.

On the sidelines of the summit, H H the Amir held meeting with a number of leaders including President of Iraq Dr. Abdul Latif Rashid, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah Al Burhan. They reviewed bilateral relations between the brotherly countries and ways to develop and strengthen them, and discussed a number of developments of mutual interest, in addition to exchanging views on the most prominent topics on the summit’s agenda, and what would enhance the joint Arab action.

The Amir’s visit to Algiers also included engagements at the bilateral level. The Amir along with President of Algeria Abdelmadjid Tebboune inaugurated an Algerian-Qatari-German hospital project, set to be established in Algeria. The two leaders also inaugurated a steel plant project of the Algerian-Qatari Steel Company, one of the largest companies in the production of iron and steel in the Arab world.

“The gravity of the stage that our pan-Arab homeland and the whole region are going through, and the obstacles in the way of realising the aspirations of our peoples in development, security and stability require a lot from us in terms of realism, frankness, awareness, and conformity of words and deeds to spare our Arab ummah these dangers. A genuine Arab solidarity is an auxiliary factor in achieving these aspirations, while its absence has negative effects,” H H the Amir had said while addressing the 28th Arab summit.

The Algiers summit also comes days ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the first world cup in the Middle East and the Arab world. Hosting the tournament is indeed an honour for the entire Arab world. The world cup is also an opportunity for the world to know the Arab culture, heritage and civilization.
