Qatar aims to increase green spaces, the number of public parks as well as develop and beautify more beaches. The country encourages people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and indulge in physical activities at parks and beaches. Green spaces reduce the carbon footprint and give positive energy and motivate people to go outside and to the nearest public parks.
The neighbourhood parks have been designed in a way to serve people of all age groups. Most of the parks have basic facilities such as jogging and cycling tracks, play areas for children and green spaces.
The country will soon have another major public park with air-conditioned jogging tracks in Rawdat Al Hamama. The park is being developed over a large area to serve surrounding neighbourhoods. It will have large green spaces with many trees from the Qatari environment. There will be enough parking lots to accommodate a large number of vehicles. It will also have play areas for children.
The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ recently inaugurated several ‘Galleries of Beaches’. The artworks beautify the beaches and add aesthetic value to them. The artworks at many beaches highlight the local environment, Qatar’s cultural monuments and local and international sporting events. They enrich the experience of beachgoers who consider them as a recreational outlet.
Qatar seeks to plant 10 million trees as part of Qatar National Vision 2030. The country marked 1 million tree plantations on December 18, 2022.
The massive campaign to plant trees seeks to reduce carbon footprint as studies suggest that a big tree absorbs the carbon emission of four vehicles.
The country has seen a remarkable increase in public parks and green spaces in the past 12 years. The number of public parks in Qatar reached 148 in 2022 from 56 in 2010, recording 164 percent growth.
The green spaces in the country rose to over 43 million square metres in 2022, from about 2.5 million square metres in 2010. The per capita share of the green area rose to 16 square metres from less than one square metre in 2010, an increase of 16 folds.
The measures by the Ministry of Municipality to overcome the challenges of water for irrigation are expected to increase the number of public parks and green areas manifold in the coming years.
The ministry in cooperation with Ashghal is laying pipelines of treated water along roads and as soon as the work is completed, the roadside plantation will start.
