There are billions of people living in this world without safe water. The Sustainable Development Goal is water for all by 2030. But according to the United Nations World Water Development Report, 3.6 billion people in the world, or nearly half of the world’s population, live in water-stressed areas or without safe water.

The saddest fact is that one in four primary schools in the world have no drinking water service, with children using unprotected sources or going thirsty. More than 700 children under the age of five die every day from diarrhoea linked to unsafe water and poor sanitation.

Access to clean water emphasizes public health and critical to sustainable development as well as a stable and prosperous world. It’s clear that the world cannot move forward as a global society while so many people are living without safe water. To emphasize this point, World Water Day is observed annually on March 22 under the aegis of United Nations.

Qatar has reached a good level of water utilisation and conservation due to its clear direction and the efforts of the authorities. The efforts of the country is well-accepted and recognised around the world in this regard, whether for the provision of water through the establishment of desalination plants and huge reservoirs or to enact laws and legislation that ensure its conservation and its rational use.

As a main initiative to conserve water and to bring in the awareness to the common man, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation, Kahramaa, through the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), has conducted special events on the occasion of World Water Day. The events highlighted water issues and the importance of providing water for all segments of society.

The Kahramaa celebration is an affirmation of its keenness to achieve the goal of sustainable development concerning water, to secure the availability of potable water for all by 2030, and to ensure sustainable water management in line with the company’s mission to provide sustainable and high-quality electricity and water for a better life in Qatar.

As part of the World Water Day, ‘A Flower Each Spring’ programme was also conducted and it emphasized the importance of water conservation, protecting its sources and ensuring its availability, as an essential source of sustaining life.

Qatar is in the forefront to mark the World Water Day as an opportunity to raise awareness and inspire others to take the necessary measures to protect water resources, which are the most important sources of life and development, as water is an essential pillar in supporting economic, social and humanitarian development.
