A socially responsible society is the backbone of any nation. It’s a great treasure and the worthiest in any predicament. General public, private and government owned institutions, media and all bodies that come in touch with the day-to-day activities in a society have a social commitment and a nation demands it during crises.
The responsible role a society plays for national development comes out in its fullest sense when a nation face crisis; like it has come out in Qatar when the siege countries imposed an unjust blockade on Qatar last year.
During siege, the entire nation stood united under the wise leadership of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and moved ahead in line with the mission to attain self-sufficiency to overcome the crisis. Instead of planning measures to be on the safer zone, all institutions and general public joined hands to build a sturdy iron wall to defend the nation.
As per the report of the Qatar Financial Centre, during siege Qataris started registering more of their assets at home and multinationals navigating a Gulf boycott of the country boosted their local presence. State owned companies and other private firms where Qataris have major shares redirected their investments to Qatar.
With this socially responsible move, Qatar easily overcame the boycott and the siege nations’ expectations to harm Qatar have turned upside down.
Qatari media also stood responsible during this time as it exposed a pack of lies and truth behind various allegations levelled against Qatar by the siege nations.
The efforts exerted by Qatar’s national airline, Qatar Airways, to avoid any kind of inconvenience to passengers and to bring all materials that Qatar required during the crisis were praiseworthy.
Qatar Airways flights initially had to take an easterly route to fly only over airspace that was open to them.
However, the International Civil Aviation Organisation approved some new routes later for Qatar that allowed it to cut through Emirati and Bahraini airspace. This was based on an application presented by Qatar to the international body.
By organising various campaigns and events, Qatar’s institutions raised confidence in the society. In fact, Qatar was really witnessing and enjoying a new patriotic wave under ‘Tamim Al Majd’.
In the meantime, Qatar University has come up with the 6th edition of the National CSR Report. It praised the social responsibility of Qatari institutions and its success in defeating the siege. The report appreciated society’s will to participate in all the political, social and economic aspects of the nation.
Qatar can really be proud of its morally responsible society and in one way the siege has helped to project this invaluable asset to the world.
