The International Labour Day, or Worker’s Day, was marked across the globe yesterday. The day is observed to raise awareness among all the people, not only among workers, about the rights of workers and celebrate their achievements regardless of their geographic location and work nature.
Same like the previous year, the event marked under COVID-19 pandemic which is an unprecedented challenge in relation to its impact on the entire population of the world. In every country across the world, the Labour Day is marked in different ways, but the goal remains the same for all that is to create awareness about labour rights, importance of their role in nations’ development march, and draw attention to lessons learned and experiences gained from the world of workers. In Qatar, the event is marked every year under well thought theme with participation of top officials, and this year’s theme focused on responding to the pandemic crisis, and refection to the ILO’s motto “World Day for Safety and Health at Work”.
On the occasion, Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs H E Yousef bin Mohammed Al Othman Fakhroo, affirmed the commitment of the State of Qatar to continue its relentless efforts aimed at promoting and protecting workers’ rights and providing a safe and healthy work environment.
The Ministry is working to implement modern legislation to keep pace with the best international standards and practices for protecting workers’ rights, in collaboration with representatives of employers and workers and various local and international partners.
The Ministry has also announced the establishment of the unified platform for complaints and disputes, to allow employees and workers to submit complaints related to work issues. In gesture to value the role of workers in Qatar, the Ministry of Municipality and Ooredoo organised delivery of 100 recharge cards to MME workers to enable them to stay connected to family, friends and loved ones with data and calling minutes.
For his part, Minister of Municipality and Environment H E Abdulla bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie congratulated the workers and thanked all workers in the various sectors for their sincere work the renaissance of the State of Qatar. The different governmental and non-governmental institutions have expressed, at different occasions, their appreciation to the valued role of workers and have showed their keenness to apply the best international standards to ensure the security and safety of expatriate workers and provide them with decent living and work conditions.
