When an individual experiences a significant deterioration in mental health, characterized by erratic behaviour or loss of rationality, they are typically referred to psychiatrists for treatment. Measures are taken to ensure their safety and the safety of others. However, when a country descends into a state of lawlessness, disregarding all forms of regulation and engaging in indiscriminate violence, it begs the question: what has become of it?
The actions of Israel in Gaza, particularly the harm inflicted upon innocent civilians trapped by siege-induced starvation, are beyond comprehension. Such brutality can only be attributed to a state that has lost its moral compass.
Yesterday, thousands of Palestinians, facing starvation amidst Gaza’s dire conditions, gathered at aid distribution points, only to be met with deadly force from Israeli troops. The tragic outcome saw over 104 fatalities and 760 injuries, highlighting the worsening humanitarian crisis in the besieged Gaza Strip. This conduct by the State of Israel is nothing short of madness. Over the past five months, Israel’s actions have prompted serious reflection on the very concept of statehood and the standards expected of nations within the international community. Israel’s blatant disregard for humanitarian law, its failure to differentiate between civilian and military targets, and its callous treatment of vulnerable groups paint a grim picture.
Israel’s behavior resembles that of extremist factions or gangsters rather than that of a responsible state. It flouts international norms and rejects the principles upheld by the global community. The country’s actions not only defy humanitarian values but also undermine international standards for the protection of human life. In response to the recent atrocities, the UN Security Council is about to convene an emergency meeting. Yet, the world’s frustration mounts as the Council’s response appears inadequate in the face of ongoing atrocities. The Council’s inaction as innocent lives are lost in front of the entire world is a stark reminder of its ineffectiveness.
Calls from nations like Qatar urge the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to transcend its inertia and adopt decisive measures to end the conflict in Gaza and alleviate its catastrophic humanitarian fallout. However, the unfortunate reality remains that several nations continue to support Israel’s occupation, genocides and apartheid system and its relentless assaults on Gazans.
The death toll, with over 30,000 lives lost and 70,000 individuals injured, underscores the urgency of ending the Israeli occupation. It is imperative to safeguard the rights of Palestinians, including their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. Moreover, those accountable for violations against Palestinians must be held to justice.
