Qatar and the United States of America have enjoyed a stable relationship built on solid foundations of mutual understanding over the last five decades.
As Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani completes his visit to the US, becoming the first leader from the Gulf to visit the Joe Biden presidency, the importance of this relationship is further highlighted and strengthened.
The Amir visit comes as Qatar continues its efforts to bring lasting peace to Afghanistan, after efforts resulted in evacuation of over 100,000 people, including Americans, and facilitating negotiations with Iran over revitalising the 2015 nuclear deal. During meeting held yesterday at the White House, the two leaders discussed along bilateral relation many regional and international issues and common interests.
Most significantly, during a press session at the White House, Biden announced plans to notify the US Congress of designating Qatar as “a major non-NATO ally to reflect the importance of our relationship,” adding, “I think it is long overdue.” Biden also applauded the Qatar Airways-Boeing deal worth $20bn, strengthening security in the Middle East and commercial investments.
For his part H H the Amir stressed the importance of 2022 to the diplomatic relations between both countries as it marks 50 years. He noted that the relationship between Qatar and the USA is very strong, and Qatar’s proud of the cooperation.
The Amir said Qatar has demonstrated the ability to work mutually with the USA highlighting the Afghanistan evacuation process. He also noted the importance of the equal rights of the Palestinian people.
“We are very happy and proud of this relationship, and we are going to find ways and means to bring peace in our region,” the Amir added.
During a similar meeting with the US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin at the Pentagon, H H the Amir also discussed strategic regional matters with him. Austin, who visited Qatar last year, reiterated America’s gratitude to the Amir and his role in enhancing security and stability in the region, achieving common goals, resolving conflicts, providing humanitarian support to civilians, and reducing tensions.
Qatar hosts the headquarters of the US Central Command and about 10,000 US troops. Being the largest foreign investor in Qatar, the economic partnership with US has exceeded $200bn. About 120 companies, wholly owned by Americans, operate in the Qatari market, along with 640 companies were established in partnership between Qatar and America. Also, 2021 marked the bridge-building Qatar-USA Year of Culture.
