Cars half-submerged in a flooded parking lot after Hurricane Sandy hit New York City yesterday.
DOHA: Qatari citizens based on the US East Coast who have been affected by hurricane Sandy are being moved to hotels to ensure their safety and the expenses are to be met by Qatar’s embassy in Washington.
Many of those affected have already been shifted to hotels and the embassy has urged others who are hit by the storm and have not yet been rescued to move to the nearest hotel and inform the mission in case people are to be evacuated from the entire area.
Qatar’s Ambassador to the US, Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi, said yesterday that the embassy was in touch with Qatari nationals in US through phones and the Internet and contact details of Qatari diplomats had been provided so people could approach them for assistance.
Those among the Qataris, whether they are students, visitors or those undergoing treatment in the US, who were affected by Sandy and facing difficulties due to power outages and flooding had been safely moved to hotels, Al Rumaihi told Al Sharq. He, however, did not disclose the number of Qataris who had been hit and had been provided temporary shelter in hotels. He said the embassy will be paying for the hotel accommodation for those affected.
