Doha: Qatar celebrates World No Tobacco Day today under the theme ‘Increase taxes on tobacco’. The Supreme Council of Health will hold programmes and activities to increase awareness about the damage caused by tobacco and its derivatives.
The day aims at encouraging 24-hour abstinence from all forms of tobacco across the world and drawing global attention to tobacco use and its adverse impact on health, which in 2013 led to an estimated 5.4 million deaths worldwide. World Health Organisation designates a theme for the day every year to create a more unified global message. The theme becomes the central component of the tobacco-related agenda for the year. For World No Tobacco Day 2014, WHO is calling on countries to raise taxes on tobacco as research shows that higher taxes are effective in reducing tobacco use and preventing young people from starting to smoke.
