DOHA: The General Authority of Customs (GAC) has foiled attempts to smuggle 22.6kg of marijuana into the country through the Hamad International Airport (HIA).
The seizure came when customs inspectors spotted suspicious bags which belonged to two travellers from Asia and upon inspection they found one bag containing 6kg of marijuana, and the other contained 3.8kg of marijuana.
The customs inspectors also seized 7kg of marijuana in a bag and a 5.8kg of marijuana which came as parcels from an African country. The person who came to collect it said it was herbal medicine but during inspection it was found to be marijuana wrapped in yellow paper.
Ahmed bin Ali Al Mohannadi, Chairman of the GAC, honoured the three customs inspectors whose alertness foiled the smuggling, and stressed on continuing their efforts to protect the country, GAC said yesterday.
He praised the professional abilities of customs officers and their exceptional knowledge of methods used by the smugglers. He said that GAC was providing employees at all ports with continuous training in order to enhance their professionalism.
Qatar’s wise leadership has put great confidence in youth, providing them with all the possibilities for development, success and creativity towards achieving Qatar National Vision 2030, Al Mohannadi added.
