QRC launches anti-blindness campaign in Dhaka schools

Doha: Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has started implementation of its School Health Department’s campaign for the treatment of eye diseases among school students in the Bangladeshi capital city of Dhaka.
The project worth $174,428 (QR634,831) in being implemented in partnership with Islamic Da’wa Organisation and World Vision as part their tripartite agreement signed last November.
In a statement, QRC said in the first stage, which took eight months, a medical team visited 60 schools in Dhaka in which 44,895 students were enrolled.
Of them, 18,404 students (boys and girls) underwent check-ups and 2,072 needed treatment.
A total of 1,295 cases were referred to hospitals for further investigation, treatment and surgeries, QRC said, adding education books were distributed to 114 teachers.
The one-year agreement aims to conduct tests and provide anti-blindness services to 200,000 students in Dhaka.
It also aims to spread awareness about eye diseases and train teachers on how to discover disorders.
