Doha: The State Cabinet, at its weekly meeting yesterday, approved a draft law on cyber crimes and referred it to the Advisory Council.

Once enforced, the law would make it punishable to breach a government website, or electronic systems of any of its organs, institutions, authorities, or affiliated bodies or companies on the Internet. The law also stipulates penalties for those running websites that publish news that jeopardise state safety, order as well as its internal and external security.

Anyone infringing the social principles or values by publishing news, photos, audio or visual recordings on the Internet, thereby violating the private and family life of an individual would also be liable to punishment as per the draft law. Even if such information or data is true, the draft law prohibits anyone violating the private life of an individual by libel or slander on the Internet or any means of information technology, QNA reported.
