DOHA: Ooredoo Algeria yesterday said it had reached the milestone of 3.5 million 3G customers within the first year of the launch of the service.
More than 3.5 million customers in 25 provinces have chosen Ooredoo’s faster and better 3G network, ranked as the fastest network in North Africa in 2014 by Network Quality Benchmark (NetQB).
Ooredoo Algeria also became one of the first operators in the world to achieve network throughput of 63MB per second, and the first operator in Africa to deploy 400G ultra-broadband mobile access network in 2014, confirming its leadership position in data and digital lifestyle services.
“Across our footprint, Ooredoo’s companies are taking the lead in providing data services that enrich our customers’ lives.
“Ooredoo Algeria’s success in supporting 3.5 million customers within the first year of its 3G services launch demonstrates again that Ooredoo holds the leadership position in the area,” said Dr Nasser Marafih, Group CEO, Ooredoo.
Ooredoo’s achievements were confirmed this month when the company received the ‘Best Telecom Operator in Africa’ from African Telecom People Awards 2014, ‘Best African Telecom Operator’ at Telecom Review awards and  ‘Bronze Stevie Award’ for new products and services at 11th International Business Awards.
The Stevie award was received for its ‘tstart’ and ‘iStart’ initiatives, launched in partnership with ANDPME.
“Ooredoo rose to meet challenges and confirmed the potential of the Algerian market by registering 3.5 million customers in less than a year, exceeding all expectations. The performance is the result of outstanding efforts of our team,” said Joseph Ged, CEO, Ooredoo Algeria.
“I am proud that we have taken the leadership position in the region in terms of network and technology while simplifying the process for accessing 3G services so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of mobile data,” he added.
As early as next month, Ooredoo’s 3G network will be extended to 32 provinces, covering 80 percent of Algeria’s population.
Ooredoo has invested more than $2bn in its network enhancement programme and intends to accelerate its investment plan to consolidate its technological leadership and make mobile data available to all Algerians.
